The second-half of 2018 was on experimentation mode in Kollywood that witnessed versatile movies. Following up on that, 2019, too, is going to be an extension of this in K’town that has a bunch of movies to watch out for.
This comprises mainstream and parallel cinema. Here's my pick of some (just for the sake of my blog's readership :P) big flicks that have set high expectations this year. Never mind, it's a ritual to publish a listicle of this kind at the beginning of every year.
After making a stamp by exploring new genre and narrative patterns through movies like Kabali, Kaala and 2.0, Rajinikanth is going back to his vintage form. Directed by Karthik Subbaraj, the movie promises to be a treat for fans of the Asian Superstar who badly wanted to see their ‘Thalaivar’ Rajini, than actor ‘Rajini’. The movie is set to release 10 January.
The wait of Ajith fans was intense as the actor did not have a single release in 2018. The last time they had a chance to see their Thala on screen was in Vivegam. Putting an end to the 14-month break, the Siva directorial venture is hitting the screens this Pongal with a plot set in a rural background. Already, the actor-director combo had a blockbuster, Veeram, which was of the same genre. So, expectations for Viswasam are sky high (Adengappa!).
This movie should have hit the screens during Pongal weekend. But, due to lack of screens, it is getting pushed back a couple of weeks (Can be rightly renamed Vanthaa Varuven). After his re-entry through Chekka Chivantha Vaanam, this Sundar C directorial venture is going to be the first movie for Simbu where he is the only hero in the story, unlike CCV. With a promising trailer, the film has already set high expectations.
No worries, it'll appear on next year's list as well. I'll brief about this film then. We'd rather wait for Dhanush-Vetri Maaran's Asuran in 2019.
After three of his hits, Katrathu Tamil, Thangameengal and Taramani, this one from filmmaker Ram is being praised internationally already. After its world premiere, Asian premiere and Indian premiere in various film festivals, this movie, starring Mamooty, will hit the screens February. With an intense album from Yuvan Shankar Raja, the film is one of the most anticipated flicks among world-cinema lovers.
This is another gem (I was told to mention so) that has already received international recognition. A musical entertainer from the well-acclaimed Rajiv Menon-A R Rahman combo, the movie, starring G V Prakash, will be releasing in February.
An official remake of the 2016 Hollywood crime-thriller Don’t Breathe (Finally they've found this phrase official-remake existed in English after all this time), the film, bankrolled by Kamal Haasan’s Raaj Kamal Films International, will have Vikram in the lead and is directed by Rajesh M Selva. The film’s first look was revealed with Vikram in a rustic look with Malaysia (Kaadaaram in Sangam literature) in the backdrop.
After collaborating with writers SuBa and Kabilan Vairamuthu, this time, filmmaker K V Anand has joined hands with noted crime novelist Pattukottai Prabhakar for this Suriya-starrer. The movie will also see Mohanlal and Arya in pivotal roles. With a very intriguing first look poster, the film is expected to be another international action drama from the director-actor combo after Ayan and Maatraan (Wait. Should I count Maatraan, a blockbuster?).
After Theri and Mersal, the successful duo, Vijay and Atlee, is coming together for the third time for this sports drama. The movie will be hitting the screens Deepavali and is said to have at least 16 actresses on board (I'm not responsible if Kanaa or Chak de India pops out inside your mind) along with Nayanthara, who plays the female lead. With music by A R Rahman, the film is bankrolled by AGS Entertainment.
Of all his eight upcoming films, this one is Vijay Sethupathi’s pick, as he has said so himself. He has joined hands with his favourite director, Thiagarajan Kumararaja, who caught the attention of the masses with his neo-noir gangster drama Aaranya Kaandam. In this film, Vijay Sethupathi plays a transgender. The film has music by Yuvan Shankar Raja and has an ensemble cast of Mysskin, Samantha, Fahad Faasil and Ramya Krishnan.
By breaking the image of a romantic or an action hero, this would be Siva’s first attempt to star in a genre to experiment his own abilities. Directed by filmmaker R Ravikumar of Indru Netru Naalai fame, this untitled flick is also a sci-fi film which is said to be an extra-terrestrial drama happening in space and Earth simultaneously (An out of the world film, literally). The film has music by A R Rahman.
